Keys to Inclusion Through Reasonable Adjustments
Last Tuesday, September 24, the Spanish Federation of Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Associations (FEBHI) held the 10th Business Breakfast, an online event that brought together 48 people from various organizations and companies, primarily from the human resources sector. The central theme of this meeting was “Reasonable Workplace Adjustments in Companies,” a key topic for integrating people with disabilities into the workforce.
The event was especially aimed at human resources personnel, as many companies face difficulties when it comes to implementing reasonable adjustments in their workplaces. This lack of knowledge often results in confusion about accessibility criteria and the proper implementation of measures to integrate people with disabilities into their teams. For this reason, FEBHI deemed it essential to provide specific training and help ensure compliance with these regulations, promoting an inclusive work environment.
José Pérez Plano, Head of Special Projects at ATAM, Institutional Relations at ViveLibre, and board member of AECEMCO, delivered the keynote presentation of the event. During his speech, he emphasized the importance of distinguishing between measures that benefit the entire workforce and those implemented as reasonable adjustments to meet the specific needs of people with disabilities. According to Pérez Plano, an inclusive approach in the workplace not only benefits people with disabilities but also the entire staff, as well as suppliers, clients, and other stakeholders.
The session covered key topics such as the definition of disability in relation to the environment, the difference between reasonable adjustments and universal accessibility, and practical examples of how to apply these adjustments. In addition, references to current legislation were provided, along with information on available support for companies. The presentation concluded with a Q&A session, where participants had the opportunity to clarify doubts and delve deeper into the topics discussed.
The event was very well received. A survey conducted by FEBHI afterward reflected that most participants rated the content as “very satisfactory,” especially regarding the speaker’s presentation. Some attendees’ comments highlighted the clarity and expertise of the speaker, as well as the relevance of the topic.
